W. Marshall over at Vestal Review. I’ve become quite enamored with flash of late, and this one has all my favorite hallmarks, best described by David Gaffney as “… nimble, nippy little thing[s] that [can] turn on a sixpence and accelerate quickly away.” And if “A Lover” isn’t enough of a weird little sawed-off tale to make my heart pitter-patter, this description of Marshall’s work-in-progress sealed my writer crush: “For the last four years he has been writing a novel about a hybrid man/rabbit living in 1850’s California called HENDO.” <3 Sigh… […]

Comment on Guidelines by Flash Fiction Markets Made Easy! | Dare to Dream http://www.vestalreview.org/guidelines/#comment-862 Thu, 20 Nov 2014 17:36:47 +0000 http://www.vestalreview.org/?page_id=31#comment-862 […] Vestal Review: This is a print/webzine that you can browser their previously publish for free online. It will give you an idea what they are looking for exactly. They accept every genre, except children and hard science fiction, at a 500 word max. They pay professional rates of about 3 to 10 cents a word and publish semiannual. This means they have reading periods: February to May, and then August to November. The do not take reprints and you can only submit two stories per reading period. In order to submit you need to go through their submission manager that can be found on their website. (Be aware that at the moment their website(s) are a little weird. It appears at the time they are trying to switch to a new website, so for guidelines use the link above but to read their previously published go to vestalreview.net.) One last point about this market, it is one of the oldest so if you are looking for something that is set in its niche this is the place, the only thing is since they are so well know they tend to have a rather low acceptance rate. My students and I have been reading several of the works, as I link to them (Bed Bugs, I Don’t Love You Too, The Color of Skin) in my creative writing course. Will you be making these links available again any time soon?
